Andriy Vorobey’s Take on Ukraine’s Next Head Coach

Following the mutual departure of Serhiy Rebrov, former striker Andriy Vorobey has shared his views on what the Ukrainian national team requires in a new manager. Rebrov had been in charge since June 2023, with his tenure lasting nearly three years. Under his leadership, Ukraine failed to qualify for the World Cup in North America, exiting in the semifinal of the qualification playoffs after a 1–3 defeat to Sweden. Despite this, Rebrov will remain within the association as Vice President of the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) and continue serving on the executive committee.

Shortlist for Head Coach Position

The UAF has already identified three candidates for the head coach role:

  • Myron Markevych
  • Ihor Jovichevych
  • Andrea Maldera

A final decision is expected by the end of April. UAF President Andriy Shevchenko has emphasized the significance of this choice for the team’s future development.

“Rebrov was a successful club coach, but the national team environment is different—you need unquestionable authority over players and strong motivational skills. In just three or four days, conveying your football philosophy and teaching a specific system is tough. That’s why I believe our team currently needs a sort of Ukrainian 'PE teacher' rather than a strategist or analyst.”

Vorobey also stressed the importance of having a strong supporting staff, recalling the successful setup under Oleh Blokhin. “I remember how powerful the coaching team was with Blokhin’s national squad—Andriy Bal, Oleh Kuznetsov, Semen Altman. They had deep football knowledge and effectively complemented the head coach,” he added.

As Ukrainian football braces for significant changes that could reshape the national team’s performance, the selection of a new coach is a pivotal moment. The squad aims to improve its results on the international stage. Vorobey’s comments highlight that the next manager must combine tactical expertise with the ability to quickly galvanize the team—a critical factor in modern football.

As the UAF narrows down its options for the new head coach, the focus turns to the qualities required for effective leadership. With candidates like Myron Markevych and Andrea Maldera being considered, understanding their coaching philosophies is crucial.
