Ukraine's YASNO Issues Stark Warning: A Perilous Winter Lies Ahead

Енергетична ситуація в Україні: виклики, що чекають на нас взимку

YASNO CEO Fears for Ukraine's Power Grid Stability Ahead of Next Winter

In an interview on the Ukrinform channel's 'Ye Rozmova' program, YASNO CEO Serhii Kovalenko expressed deep concern about the state of Ukraine's energy system as it approaches the end of February 2026. He warned against the illusion that the energy crisis is over, stressing that with nine months until the next winter, the threat of Russian shelling remains constant. This warning comes as Ukraine's energy infrastructure continues to recover from targeted attacks.

Kovalenko assessed the condition of Ukraine's power grid as 'stably difficult.' He also explained the 'deferred demand' effect, where electricity consumption can spike by 3 to 6 times during periods when power is available. This means that even if consumers receive electricity for a limited time, they will still use the same total amount of energy, potentially overloading the fragile system.

'I am very worried about this phrase 'a window of calm.' I worry, first, that this calm will be shattered by the occupier. Secondly, that we don't get the feeling that our troubles are already over. The next winter is nine months away.' Serhii Kovalenko

He further noted that consumers with limited access to power are adapting their habits to maximize usage when electricity is available. 'If I have 8 hours of electricity a day now, of course, I shift all my household chores to that period... In terms of laundry: whether there is power or none at all, I will still use the same amount of electricity in a week,' he stated.

YASNO's alert underscores that Ukraine must prepare for significant challenges in the next heating season, as the energy situation remains precarious. The company's warning highlights the critical need for preparedness amid an ongoing war that directly threatens infrastructure stability.

This statement from YASNO emphasizes the importance of readiness for potential energy crises in Ukraine. Consumers are urged to remain cautious and adapt their habits to use available electricity as efficiently as possible, as uncertainty over security and supply could lead to severe consequences during the winter months.
