Weekly Respiratory Illness Cases in Ukraine Surpass 140,000
Ukraine has reported a significant surge in cases of acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI), influenza, and COVID-19 for the week of January 26 to February 1, 2026. A total of 141,127 people fell ill during this period, comprising 70,928 adults and 70,199 children. This figure represents a 10.6% increase compared to the previous week. Additionally, 208 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed, and 5,479 patients required hospitalization due to complications, including 3,096 children.
Preventing ARVI
The epidemic season in Ukraine officially began on September 29, 2025. From that date through February 1, 2026, a cumulative total of 2,211,526 people have contracted ARVI. This indicates a 7.3% rise in incidence compared to the same timeframe last year. Since the season's start, 20,286 COVID-19 cases have been registered.
It is crucial to remember key prevention measures for ARVI:
- Wash hands regularly and use hand sanitizer,
- Maintain a balanced diet,
- Ensure proper indoor ventilation,
- Avoid large crowds,
- Stay home if you experience cold symptoms,
- Get a free COVID-19 vaccination from your family doctor or a medical facility.
If you experience muscle or joint aches, a sore throat, a fever of 38°C (100.4°F) or higher, a cough, or a headache, it is recommended to consult a doctor.
The rising incidence of ARVI and COVID-19 in Ukraine underscores the need for heightened preventive measures and public awareness regarding the importance of vaccination and hygiene. The high number of cases among children is a particular concern, requiring attention from parents and healthcare professionals. This seasonal wave of illness can strain healthcare systems and disrupt schools, making vigilance and timely response to the evolving situation essential.
