Ukrainian Wrestlers Shine at U23 European Championships
Ukraine's national team won a total of 13 medals at the U23 European Championships, held in Serbia from March 9 to 15. The medal haul included 4 in freestyle wrestling and 6 in women's wrestling. The Greco-Roman wrestling contingent contributed significantly to this success, securing three of those medals. This strong performance highlights Ukraine's continued development of world-class wrestling talent across all disciplines.
More than 400 wrestlers competed at the event, with Ukraine represented by 30 athletes—10 each in freestyle, women's, and Greco-Roman wrestling. The achievements in Greco-Roman were particularly notable. Yehor Yakhushenko won the U23 European title in the 97 kg weight class. Additionally, the following athletes earned bronze medals at the continental championship:
- Yevhen Pokovba in the 60 kg weight class
- Irfan Mirzoev in the 77 kg weight class
Yevhen Pokovba is a former U17 European and World champion. Irfan Mirzoev holds the titles of World champion and U23 European vice-champion, and is also a medalist at the U20 World and European Championships. Champion Yehor Yakhushenko is a two-time U20 and U23 World champion, as well as a U20 and U23 European champion. The expert commission of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine has recognized him three times as the best young athlete of the month, and in 2024 he was named the best young athlete of the year.
