Ukrainian President's Statement

On March 30, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced his country's readiness for a mutual ceasefire during the upcoming Easter holidays. He emphasized that Ukraine supports any format for ending the war, provided it safeguards the nation's dignity and independence.

'We have supported any formats for ending the war, you know this, but when you do not lose the dignity and independence of our state, and a ceasefire, any formats, as we already discussed today, both full and energy-related, and we are ready for a ceasefire on the Easter holidays.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Russia's Response

In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a 'silence regime' to be established from 4:00 PM on April 11 until the end of the day on April 12, 2026. This move comes amid ongoing efforts by both sides to find common ground for de-escalation, though their fundamental positions remain far apart. The Institute for the Study of War notes that Zelenskyy continues to make concessions and demonstrate Ukraine's willingness for diplomatic dialogue and commitments to an unconditional ceasefire.

Grigory Karasin, head of the Russian Federation Council's International Affairs Committee, commented on Zelenskyy's statement, underscoring the importance of dialogue. However, the Institute's analysis asserts that the Russian Federation shows no interest in ending the conflict or engaging in serious negotiations to stop the war.

These statements and steps from both sides may represent an attempt to cultivate a positive image in the eyes of the international community. For Western observers, such gestures are often seen as tactical moves within a broader strategic conflict. Achieving a stable peace will require far more than declarations of temporary truces, and real progress remains elusive without a demonstrated willingness for compromise from both parties, which currently appears problematic.

As the diplomatic landscape continues to shift, the recent developments highlight the complexities of the situation. While Zelenskyy's call for a ceasefire during Easter reflects a willingness for dialogue, Russia's refusal to agree to a truce raises questions about the sincerity of negotiations. For a deeper understanding of the ongoing conflict and the implications of these stances, explore how Russia's recent actions may impact future peace efforts in our detailed analysis of the rejected Easter ceasefire.
