Meeting of the Ukrainian and Polish Presidents

On the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki. The discussions lasted more than an hour, focusing on the security situation and the need to maintain close cooperation. The leaders agreed to continue their dialogue and stay in touch on matters of bilateral cooperation and regional security.

Just before the meeting, Polish President Karol Nawrocki decided to strip Volodymyr Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle. This move came after a controversy over the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after UPA heroes. In response, several Ukrainian officials announced they would return their Polish awards, and Zelensky stated he had sent the order back to Poland by mail.

It was an important and necessary conversation—we talked for over an hour.

Zelensky also emphasized:

We share one common threat: Russia. It is crucial to maintain mutual understanding, support, and act together. Our countries need nothing less than strong relations.

Against this backdrop, there is a growing belief within the Polish government that Zelensky’s push to create a Ukrainian National Pantheon is deepening the rift between Kyiv and Warsaw. Still, both nations recognize the need to keep dialogue and cooperation alive despite ongoing bilateral disputes.

The Importance of Cooperation

This meeting highlights the significance of cooperation between Ukraine and Poland amid rising security challenges in the region. Even with existing disagreements over historical issues and national identity, both countries understand the necessity of joining forces against common threats. The dialogue between the leaders could serve as an important step toward strengthening ties and finding future compromises.

Amidst these discussions, the historical context of Ukraine-Poland relations remains crucial. As noted by historian Hrytsak, the absence of mature elites for reconciliation poses significant challenges for both nations. Understanding this dynamic is essential for grasping the complexities behind their cooperation. To explore this perspective further, read more about the historian's insights on the matter here.
