Meeting between Ukraine’s president and the NATO secretary general
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Ankara. Their discussions covered several key topics, including:
- bolstering Ukraine’s air defense systems;

The meeting took place alongside the NATO summit, held on July 7–8 with leaders from all 32 alliance member countries.
They also addressed additional contributions from NATO members to the PURL program and efforts to form an anti-ballistic missile coalition. Commenting on the situation, Volodymyr Zelensky stated:
“It is crucial right now that all channels supporting the protection of our skies—both bilateral and multilateral—operate at maximum capacity.”
The Ukrainian president also reported that roughly 30,000 Russian troops are eliminated each month, and that no major Russian oil refinery has escaped Ukrainian strikes. He called on partners to join the Drone Deal initiative and to support licensed production of Patriot systems in Ukraine. Zelensky stressed the need to accelerate the creation of a European ballistic missile defense system to ensure effective protection.
Following the meeting, Zelensky noted that both sides 'agreed to work promptly to implement everything discussed.' The Ukrainian leader is also expected to hold talks with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the NATO summit.
