Ukraine Extends Mirror Strikes on Russian Energy Infrastructure

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced the continuation of retaliatory strikes targeting Russian energy facilities. According to the president, these operations aim to inflict maximum pain on Russia, whose losses have already reached tens of billions of dollars. Zelensky stressed that Moscow cannot offset these damages through cooperation with Iran. He made it clear that as long as Russia keeps destroying Ukraine’s power grid, Ukrainian defense forces will escalate their responses.

“Our strikes on Russia’s energy sector are, without a doubt, mirror actions. We hit what hurts Russia the most. And it is extremely painful—we see the results. Today, their losses amount to tens of billions. These are critical losses for Russia. They will not be able to compensate for this deficit through their war in Iran,” Volodymyr Zelensky said during an online briefing with journalists.

Targeting Assets That Fund the War

The president also emphasized that destroying facilities enabling Russia to finance its war and manufacture weapons remains a top priority for Ukrainian intelligence and military forces. “We will not stop. We see that Russia has no intention of stopping. It strikes our energy system and beyond. We will respond by targeting their largest generating capacities and the facilities they use to build weapons,” Zelensky stated.

Additionally, Zelensky confirmed expectations for the first tranche of European Union aid, totaling 90 billion euros, which is scheduled to arrive at the end of spring. The funding will focus on two main areas:

  • Defense
  • Domestic defense-industrial complex

The president underscored the importance of Ukraine fulfilling its commitments to the EU, even on complex issues like the operation of the Druzhba oil pipeline. Kyiv is counting on the swift activation of the European support package, highlighting the need for corresponding steps from the EU.

These statements from President Zelensky reaffirm Ukraine’s ongoing strategic fight against Russian aggression, particularly through strikes on the aggressor’s critical infrastructure. The focus on mirror responses reflects Ukraine’s goal not only to protect its own energy security but also to impose economic costs on Russia. The anticipated EU tranche will serve as a key element of support for Ukraine in this struggle, especially in strengthening defense capabilities and industrial development—underscoring the vital role of international cooperation in this context.

In light of Ukraine's ongoing strategy to strike back at Russia, it's essential to understand the broader implications of these military actions. The president's commitment to targeting key assets highlights a strategic shift aimed at crippling Russia's oil revenue, which is crucial for financing its military operations.
