First G7-Ukraine Multilateral Meeting Concludes

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the conclusion of the inaugural multilateral session in the G7-Ukraine format, held on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit in Évian-les-Bains, France. He expressed gratitude to the leaders of participating nations and European institutions for their continued backing. During the meeting, Ukraine’s main objectives were laid out, which include:

  • an urgent increase in the supply of air defense missiles and the granting of licenses for domestic production;
  • preparations for the winter season;
  • stepping up international economic pressure and sanctions against Russia.

G7 Leaders in Attendance and Bilateral Talks

The session brought together leaders from G7 countries, including Emmanuel Macron (France), Keir Starmer (United Kingdom), Giorgia Meloni (Italy), Mark Carney (Canada), Friedrich Merz (Germany), Donald Trump (United States), Sanae Takaichi (Japan), António Costa (European Council), and Ursula von der Leyen (European Commission). The United States also signaled its willingness to act as a security guarantor for Ukraine, providing backup across defense and economic fronts.

A bilateral meeting between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump took place during the summit. On the American side, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio participated, while Ukraine was represented by National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov. In his remarks, Trump described the war in Ukraine as "madness" due to the heavy casualties on both sides:

“The key is to ensure everything discussed is implemented. Russia must realize that its war will never become the norm.” — Volodymyr Zelenskyy

The official working session of the G7 summit, titled 'Building Peace and Security for Ukraine and for Europe,' has concluded. Among the key priorities identified for Ukraine are:

  • an immediate scale-up in the supply of air defense missiles and licenses for their domestic manufacture;
  • the creation of a comprehensive support package to stabilize and protect Ukraine’s energy system during winter;
  • continued intensification of international economic and sanctions pressure on Russia.

The wrap-up of the G7-Ukraine meeting underscores the critical role of international support for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. Discussions centered on urgent needs like missile deliveries and winter readiness highlight the Ukrainian government’s serious push to bolster the country’s defense capabilities and energy resilience. Participants also reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation on sanctions against the aggressor, a vital step toward ensuring regional stability.
