Ukrainian President’s Statements
Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, has declared that his country currently holds its most formidable military stance since the full-scale war began more than two years ago, while insisting that Russia has secured no victories in the conflict. He made these remarks following talks in London with the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. Zelensky also addressed a move by several councils affiliated with Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party to remove Ukrainian flags from public buildings in Britain, warning:
“This is a small mistake that could destroy a great friendship.” — Volodymyr Zelensky
The president underscored the critical role of British support, noting that since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, the UK has provided over £20 billion in military, humanitarian, and economic aid to Ukraine. “The British have been helping us from the very beginning of this war. It’s about security, not just values. It’s about security in Europe,” Zelensky stated.
Invitation for King Charles and Calls for Assistance
During the visit, Zelensky plans to extend a formal invitation to King Charles III for a state visit to Ukraine later this year. He met with the monarch at Buckingham Palace on Monday. Discussions also touched on the £2.4 billion generated from the sale of Chelsea Football Club, formerly owned by Roman Abramovich. Zelensky stressed that those funds have yet to be transferred to Ukraine and that preparations are underway for a potential legal case.
Zelensky urged the UK and its allies to ramp up their support, specifically calling for a no-fly zone over Ukraine and a shift to contract-based military service. He also advocated for tighter alignment between British and European sanctions policies, pushing for new restrictions against Moscow. “Russia started this war. So why not use Russian money?” he asked.
Ahead of next month’s NATO summit in Ankara, Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance serves the interests of its allies. “We will share this invaluable information and experience with our allies,” he said.
Zelensky’s remarks highlight the ongoing importance of international backing for Ukraine amid the protracted war with Russia. His emphasis on closing the skies over Ukraine and imposing fresh sanctions on Moscow reflects Kyiv’s drive for more robust action from Western partners. The knowledge and battlefield insights Ukraine can offer NATO are expected to be key topics at the upcoming Alliance summit.
As Ukraine continues to strengthen its military capabilities, President Zelensky has emphasized the urgent need for enhanced air defense systems.
