Trump faces opposition to restoring missile supplies to Ukraine
According to The Wall Street Journal, the Pentagon secretly banned Kyiv from using American ballistic and British cruise missiles to strike Russia, undermining Trump's support for a peaceful process in Ukraine. It is unclear whether Trump himself supported such a course, however, in recent times restrictions on supplying weapons to Ukrainian forces have been reviewed.
In July, the Pentagon suspended the supply of important weapons for Ukraine, however, as a result of Trump's interference, they were still delivered. 'He must overturn the Pentagon's policy regarding the use of missiles by Ukrainians,' noted representatives of Ukraine.
Ukraine is already attacking targets in Russia using drones, but its missile weaponry is significantly less powerful. Currently, the U.S. is preparing to transfer several thousand ERAM missiles as part of a $850 million arms package funded by European countries.
Questions of weapon effectiveness
The ban on the use of ERAM missiles against Russia could significantly complicate the effectiveness of this weapon. Analysts are calling for the provision of additional ATACMS systems to increase pressure on Russian targets.
Although there is a fear that a strike on Russia could lead to escalation of the conflict, past events demonstrate that these risks may be exaggerated. Trump has the opportunity to pressure Moscow, however, for this his administration needs to act in unity.
In addition to the missile sale plan, the U.S. has also approved the supply of Patriot equipment and Starlink services to Ukraine.
Ukrainian troops conducting drone strikes on Russia need modern weaponry that will allow them to defend the country's sovereignty. The restoration of missile supplies could help strengthen defense capabilities and increase pressure on Russia in the region. However, there is a risk of escalating the conflict, so it is important that the actions of the U.S. and Ukraine are coordinated and well-grounded.
