Ukrainian TV Host Anatolii Anatolich Wheeled to Finish Line After Boston Marathon Collapse
Anatolii Anatolich's Boston Marathon Challenge
According to Главком: Ukrainian television host Anatolii Anatolich completed the Boston Marathon, but his participation ended in a dramatic medical incident. Despite pushing through severe difficulties, he collapsed upon finishing and required a wheelchair to be transported to an ambulance for emergency care. The Boston Marathon is one of the world's most prestigious and physically demanding long-distance races.
Before the race began, Anatolich posted a photo on social media holding a Ukrainian flag. However, his health took a sudden turn for the worse during the run. According to his wife, publicist Yuliia Boiko, Anatolich experienced severe leg cramps and lost the use of his legs approximately 5 kilometers (about 3 miles) from the finish line, forcing him to cover the final segment on foot.
Aftermath of the Race
At the finish line, Anatolii Anatolich was placed in a wheelchair and taken to receive medical attention. He later shared his experience:
'I finished. But my body failed. I simply didn't give myself enough time to adjust to the time zone change. They are wheeling me in this chair because I couldn't get up from the asphalt where I sat down. But overall, I'm okay. Thank you all for your support. I'm heading home.' Anatolii Anatolich
Anatolich added that he had never faced such physical hardship before: 'My body just started shutting down. I've never experienced anything like this! I couldn't even film. I had no strength. I still made it to the finish. My muscles were cramping. I couldn't even stand. I wanted to record a video of my finish, but I couldn't even film my own moment of completion.'
The incident during the marathon drew significant attention. In its wake, Yuliia Boiko also expressed concern about the inaction of Kyiv police following an unrelated event on Khreshchatyk Street on April 19th.
Anatolich's participation in the Boston Marathon was a significant event, both personally and as a symbolic act of international support for Ukraine. The health crisis he endured highlights the critical importance of proper acclimatization and preparation for extreme physical exertion, especially when dealing with jet lag. This case has also sparked discussion about the responsiveness of medical services at major sporting events, a crucial consideration for future organizers.
