Anthropic Updates Claude Chatbot to Block AI Replicas of Popular Video Games While Supporting Original Development
Claude Chatbot Receives Major Update from Anthropic
According to НВ — Техно: On November 2, Anthropic introduced an important update to its Claude chatbot, implementing a ban on generating AI replicas of specific video games to safeguard intellectual property rights. Despite this restriction, Claude remains a valuable tool for assisting users in creating original games and projects, particularly within certain genres or based on user-owned materials.
These new guidelines embedded in Claude’s programming were uncovered by a user on the social platform X. The instructions explicitly prohibit recreating existing video games, even under different titles. Addy Osmani, a representative from Anthropic’s technical team, confirmed the company’s commitment to preventing the misuse of Claude in ways that infringe on intellectual property. He stated:
"The company is dedicated to preventing the use of Claude for violations of intellectual property rights." – Addy Osmani
Increasing Accountability in the Industry
This move comes amid a rise in AI-driven projects that reproduce well-known games like:
- Halo: Combat Evolved
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
- Grand Theft Auto V
Last year, Anthropic agreed to a $1.5 billion settlement following a class-action lawsuit involving around 500,000 authors who accused the company of using their works to train AI models. Osmani emphasized that Anthropic will continue refining its policies to strike the right balance between enabling Claude’s capabilities and protecting copyright holders.
As AI technologies increasingly influence video game creation, the issue of intellectual property rights has become more pressing. Restrictions against replicating famous games through chatbots like Claude reflect a growing sense of corporate responsibility in defending creators’ rights. This development also highlights the challenge of fostering innovation while respecting legal frameworks in the gaming industry.
This recent update by Anthropic highlights the growing challenges in protecting intellectual property within the AI landscape. Similarly, the lawsuit filed by Elvis Presley’s rights holders against the company emphasizes the urgent need for clear guidelines as AI continues to reshape creative industries.
