This device leverages Apple’s extensive network of devices and combines Bluetooth Low Energy with Ultra Wideband technology to relay location data with high precision. Unlike GPS trackers, AirTag does not include satellite GPS or cellular connectivity, which limits its functionality in certain environments.

How AirTag Works

Using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), AirTag emits encrypted signals at regular intervals. Nearby Apple devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches detect these signals and anonymously send location information to Apple’s Find My network, allowing owners to track their items. The Precision Finding feature, available on iPhone 11 and later models, utilizes the U1 chip and Ultra Wideband technology to pinpoint the AirTag’s position with centimeter-level accuracy.

Equipped with a built-in speaker, AirTag can play sounds to assist in locating lost items. It runs on a user-replaceable CR2032 lithium coin cell battery that lasts about one year. Replacing the battery is tool-free-just twist the stainless steel back cover counterclockwise. Apple advises against using batteries with bitter coatings, as they may cause the device to malfunction.

The AirTag can be attached to keyrings, slipped into backpack pockets, or placed inside luggage. It performs best in urban areas with a high density of Apple devices. However, it is less effective in remote or rural settings, such as forests, where fewer Apple users are present. It is important to note that AirTag is not a substitute for dedicated GPS trackers used for vehicles or real-time child monitoring, as it only provides location history rather than continuous live tracking.

AirTag does not support pairing or tracking through Android smartphones. The Android app Tracker Detect is only designed to identify unknown AirTags nearby, enhancing user security. On iPhones, if an unknown AirTag remains close to a user for an extended period without its owner, the device issues visual and audible alerts, and the AirTag itself emits a sound to prevent unauthorized tracking.

Notably, AirTag lacks charging ports such as Lightning or USB-C and does not support MagSafe wireless charging, which shapes its user experience and convenience. Despite these constraints, AirTag represents an innovative addition to Apple's product lineup, offering new ways to keep track of personal items.
