Flight Cancellations and Sports Event Delays

According to Главком: Olympic gold medalist Viktor Shalimov announced that a flight to Sochi for Russian hockey veterans was canceled due to a drone attack. This disruption occurred as 13 airports across southern Russia suspended operations in the aftermath of the assault. The canceled flight prevented the hockey veterans from departing Moscow for Sochi. Russia’s Ministry of Transport released a list of affected airports that halted their activities:

  • Astrakhan
  • Vladikavkaz
  • Volgograd
  • Gelendzhik
  • Grozny
  • Krasnodar
  • Makhachkala
  • Magas
  • Mineralnye Vody
  • Nalchik
  • Sochi
  • Stavropol
  • Elista

The Gala Match of the Night Hockey League, scheduled to take place at the Bolshoy Ice Palace in Sochi on May 8, 2026, has also been rescheduled. Originally planned as a game between the Hockey Legends team and the Night Hockey League squad, the event’s start time shifted from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM Moscow time. The Night Hockey League was founded on December 15, 2011, on the initiative of Vladimir Putin and Russian hockey players. For context, this league is part of a broader effort to promote amateur hockey across Russia, often involving former professional players.

Elimination of Georgy Kamalov

Separately, reports emerged about the elimination of Russian occupier Georgy Kamalov. He was 46 years old at the time of his death. Kamalov played for the Era Vladivostok team from 2003 to 2011, ended his career due to an injury, and transitioned into coaching. In recent years, he worked with the football club Anri, leading it to the level of the Russian Cup. According to Dmitry Nizovtsev,

“He was up to his ears in debt. That’s why he signed a contract. He paid off the debt after receiving a payout. But then he had to go fight. And die. At the age of 46.”

Russian propaganda outlets have not disclosed the date or details of Kamalov’s elimination.

The flight cancellations and sports event rescheduling highlight the severe impact of drone attacks on Russia’s infrastructure, likely affecting future events and logistics in the country. Meanwhile, the elimination of Georgy Kamalov underscores the involvement of former athletes in military conflicts and their personal circumstances, potentially sparking debate about war’s toll on civilian life. These developments emphasize the complexity of the socio-political situation in Russia and its ripple effects across various sectors, including sports.

In light of recent events, the impact of drone attacks on Russian sports is becoming increasingly evident. A similar incident forced a Russian football club to forfeit a match, highlighting the widespread disruption these assaults are causing across various sports.
