Russian Strikes on Ukraine Sever Moldova's Key Power Link to Europe
Isaccea-Vulcănești Cross-Border Power Line Disrupted
According to Главком: A critical power line connecting Moldova's electricity grid to Romania's European network has been taken offline due to damage sustained during Russian attacks on Ukraine. The Isaccea-Vulcănești interconnection line, operated by Moldova's state-owned Moldelectrica, has developed faults that require repair. In response, Moldelectrica is urging citizens to conserve electricity, particularly during peak hours. Moldova, which is not a member of the EU, relies heavily on energy imports and interconnection with neighboring states for its power supply.
Critical Infrastructure Targeted in Overnight Assault
The damage resulted from a large-scale overnight assault on March 24th, during which Russia deployed drones and missiles against Ukrainian infrastructure. The attacks caused damage across 11 regions of Ukraine. Repair crews are currently working to restore the damaged systems and address the faults on the power line.
Moldelectrica is collaborating with grid operators in Ukraine and Romania to maintain a continuous electricity supply. Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated:
'Last night's strikes severed a key energy connection linking Moldova to Europe. Alternative routes have been activated, but the situation remains unstable. Russia bears sole responsibility for this.'
The disruption of the Isaccea-Vulcănești line underscores the vulnerability of interconnected energy systems to regional instability. Attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure that cascade into neighboring countries highlight the urgent need for enhanced regional cooperation on energy security. In the current climate, it is vital for nations to develop alternative power supply routes and adhere to measures that reduce consumption during peak demand periods.
The recent strikes have not only impacted Moldova but have also caused significant outages in Ukraine. As reported, six regions in Ukraine experienced blackouts due to similar energy assaults. This situation highlights the interconnectedness of energy systems in the region and the far-reaching consequences of the ongoing conflict.
