This innovative reintroduction approach offers a vital tool for restoring the critically endangered population of these crocodiles in Bangladesh, where decades of intense hunting have severely depleted their numbers.
Study Insights and Findings
Focusing on the mangrove forests of the Sundarbans, biologists tracked the movement patterns of mangrove crocodiles. Overhunting for their valuable skins caused a drastic population decline in Bangladesh by the 1970s. Legal protections for the species were enacted in 1973, yet recent surveys estimate only about 140 sexually mature individuals remain in the Sundarbans’ mangrove ecosystem.
Previous conservation efforts primarily released hatchlings into the wild, but these young crocodiles faced high mortality rates and rarely reached adulthood. In a novel research initiative, scientists equipped five crocodiles with satellite transmitters: three females raised on farms for 8 to 22 years, one wild adult native to the area, and a wild crocodile named Jongra, who was relocated 132 kilometers from his original territory.
Remarkably, the three farm-raised females adapted well to their new environments and did not attempt to return to captivity, exhibiting behaviors akin to truly wild crocodiles. In contrast, Jongra displayed a strong homing instinct, traveling over 30 kilometers per day to swim back toward his original home range. These observations highlight the feasibility of releasing captive adults and their ability to adjust to the wild.
This project opens new pathways for reviving endangered species populations devastated by human impact.
The significance of these results lies in demonstrating that adult crocodiles, conditioned in captivity, can integrate into natural ecosystems-a departure from earlier methods focusing solely on releasing juveniles.
