Free Screenings for the Detection of Cancer

According to Главком: On April 7, World Health Day, Kyiv residents are reminded of their access to free key screenings for the early detection of cancer at municipal medical institutions under the Medical Guarantee Programme. The information about this initiative was reported by 'Glavcom,' citing the Kyiv City State Administration's Department of Health.

Six primary examinations are available for the capital's residents and internally displaced persons (IDPs). The state fully covers the cost of these tests within the Medical Guarantee Programme. To receive free screening, an electronic referral from a family doctor or treating physician is required. The patient can choose any medical facility (public or private) that has a contract with Ukraine's National Health Service (NHSU).

Available Examinations and Their Details

The free examinations are available to specific age groups:

  • Mammography and colonoscopy – for patients aged 40 and over;
  • Hysteroscopy, gastroscopy, cystoscopy, and bronchoscopy – for patients aged 50 and over.

The free package includes:

  • A pre-examination consultation with a doctor;
  • The diagnostic procedure itself (with anesthesia if necessary);
  • Collection of material for histological examination (biopsy);
  • Analysis and delivery of results (on a digital medium or film).

In Ukraine in 2025, over 50% of all cancer cases were detected for the first time during preventive check-ups. In recent years, Kyiv has seen an increase in new cases of cancer of the lip, larynx, rectum, and skin melanoma. Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, the number of cases has been rising and is not expected to decrease before 2040. This trend underscores the critical importance of early detection programmes.

The nearest participating hospital can be found by calling the NHSU contact center at 16-77 or by using the online map on the NHSU website.

This initiative represents a crucial step in combating cancer, especially given its increasing prevalence in Ukraine.

Free screenings enable the detection of disease at early stages, which significantly improves the chances of successful treatment. It is vital for the public to be aware of and actively use these available opportunities, as early diagnosis is key to preserving health.
