Free Online Course 'Don’t Freeze – Power Up: Light, Heat, Internet'

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: The Eastern Europe Foundation, in partnership with the Swiss-funded EGAP Program and Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (DSNS), has launched a free online course titled 'Don’t Freeze – Power Up: Light, Heat, Internet.' Designed specifically for Ukrainians preparing for the autumn and winter seasons amid ongoing conflict, this course focuses on safe practices when using alternative power sources. Nearly 50,000 participants have already completed the eight-lecture program. Those who finish the course receive a certificate equivalent to 0.2 ECTS credits or six academic hours.

Challenges and Practical Guidance

Since the start of Russia’s large-scale invasion, attacks have repeatedly damaged Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, resulting in frequent interruptions to electricity, water, and gas supplies. As colder months approach, many Ukrainians rely on power banks, batteries, and generators to maintain basic services.

However, improper use of these devices, system overloads, and lack of safety knowledge have led to accidents, fires, and emergencies. This course equips participants with essential know-how on:

  • Safely wiring apartments or houses;
  • Preparing for power outages in multi-unit buildings;
  • Using various electrical devices under different conditions;
  • Choosing the right equipment;
  • Selecting the appropriate fire extinguisher for home use.

The course is presented by Oleg Fagot Mykhailyuta and Oleksandr Fozzi Sydorenko from the band TNMK, with practical advice from DSNS press officer Oleksandr Khorunzhyi. Registration is open via a dedicated link, enabling anyone to access vital information on safely managing alternative energy sources during these challenging times.

Given the ongoing threats to Ukraine’s infrastructure, this educational initiative plays a crucial role in enhancing public safety. By teaching safe energy practices, it aims to reduce accidents and better prepare citizens for the hardships of winter, helping to protect lives and maintain a degree of comfort despite the war’s difficulties.

As the winter months draw near, ensuring your home is well-prepared for potential energy disruptions is crucial. In addition to the free course mentioned, you can explore further insights on preparing homes for prolonged power outages during the heating season, which can provide valuable strategies to enhance your family's safety and comfort.
