Soloviy.app: A Free Online Dictionary with Over 17,000 Ukrainian Words and a Dialect Map
About the Soloviy.app Initiative
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Gera Alieva from Kryvyi Rih developed Soloviy.app, a free online dictionary dedicated to preserving Ukraine’s rich linguistic diversity. Featuring more than 17,000 words collected from 27 regions across the country, the platform is continuously enriched by native speakers. A small team of three verifies all entries. In October 2026, Soloviy.app was officially recognized as a recommended resource for learning Ukrainian by the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language.
Key Features of the Dictionary
The dialect map integrated into the dictionary contains over 28,000 entries. More than 16,000 of these come from scholarly dialect dictionaries, while users have contributed around 10,500 entries. The app has been downloaded over 41,000 times on both iOS and Android devices, maintaining a 4.5-star rating on Google Play.
Every user-submitted word suggestion undergoes a thorough review process, which checks for:
- clarity of meaning
- inclusion of example usage
- word uniqueness
- compliance with linguistic standards
Some words and place names are cross-referenced with academic dialectological sources, with each map location citing its reference. User feedback helps correct any mistakes. It’s important to note that user submissions serve as individual attestations rather than formal dialectologist field recordings.
Gera Alieva explains: 'Our goal is for everyone to find words they heard at home and realize these words are an integral part of the Ukrainian language.'
Looking ahead, the team plans to verify more user contributions against scientific materials and develop additional educational content. Users can explore regional words on the dialect map, contribute local terms, and even access open data through a free API for research purposes.
Soloviy.app plays a crucial role in safeguarding and promoting the Ukrainian language by inviting all Ukrainians to actively participate in its linguistic heritage. This collaborative approach highlights the importance of collective memory and cultural identity while fostering greater language inclusivity. The project also serves as a valuable tool for educators and researchers interested in the regional characteristics of Ukrainian speech.
