Bild: Germany is negotiating with the USA for the transfer of Patriot systems to Ukraine
The German government is actively discussing with the US administration the possibility of transferring Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine. This initiative was proposed in light of the suspension of American supplies, which seriously jeopardized Ukraine's defense capability. According to the BILD publication, the German government has even sent an official request to US Secretary of Defense Pete Gage regarding the transfer of two Patriot systems. Germany is ready to finance this delivery independently. Government representatives confirmed the veracity of this information. The Patriot system plays a key role in protecting Ukraine's territory, helping to repel Russian attacks and safeguarding civilians and critical infrastructure, particularly power stations. The existing six Patriot systems in Kyiv are insufficient for full-fledged protection of the country. The American White House, without public explanation, suspended previously approved military supplies, leading to a shortage of defense resources and causing concern in several European countries. Despite earlier attempts to acquire Patriot systems directly from the USA, Ukraine has now turned to Germany for support. The request for the transfer of Patriot systems was made several weeks ago and was discussed at a meeting of the German cabinet on Friday. Security experts see the situation intensifying due to Russian airstrikes aimed at depleting Ukraine's Patriot missile stocks. The suspension of American supplies was positively perceived in the Kremlin.
Jan S. Berends, a Russia expert from the European University in Frankfurt (Oder), told BILD that Trump's decision was not a surprise: 'Trump is implementing a policy he has long announced.'
In his opinion, the US exit means 'an hour for Europe,' when Germany, France, and Poland need to 'quickly close the gaps that have formed.'
The German government is negotiating with the USA regarding the possible transfer of Patriot systems to Ukraine to support the country’s defense capability amidst the suspension of American supplies. The German side is even ready to finance this delivery independently, as confirmed by official sources. If the deal is successfully concluded, Ukraine will receive the necessary means to defend itself against possible threats and attacks.
