Belarus Builds Its Largest Cemetery Near the Ukrainian Border

Construction of Belarus’s Biggest Cemetery Underway

According to Radiotrek — Світ: Near the city of Gomel, just a short distance from the border with Ukraine’s Chernihiv region, Belarus is developing its largest cemetery complex. Covering an area of 150 hectares, the project is being carried out in stages. The city has announced a tender worth nearly 1.6 million Belarusian rubles, funded from the municipal budget, to complete the second phase of the first stage.

To make way for the expansion, forestland adjacent to the existing Stukachi Cemetery is being gradually cleared. Approximately 127 hectares will be dedicated to traditional burials, with capacity for around 182,000 graves. Plans also include the construction of a crematorium and columbariums for interring ashes. Once finished, the Stukachi complex is expected to surpass Minsk’s Northern Cemetery as the largest in the country.
