Belarus Expands Ammunition Manufacturing

According to Главком: Belarus is significantly increasing its production of various munitions, specifically:

  • 152mm artillery shells;
  • rockets for 'Grad' multiple launch rocket systems;
  • rounds for grenade launchers.

Alexander Lukashenko has emphasized the critical role of artillery in modern warfare, stating that conventional weapons like artillery and 152mm ammunition are decisive. This industrial shift could have serious implications for Ukraine, heightening the risk of Belarus becoming more directly involved in the conflict. The 'Grad' system is a Soviet-era rocket launcher known for its saturation fire capability.

Ukraine's Security Concerns

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed deep concern over the situation in Belarus, directly addressing its people. He recalled that the Belarusian regime permitted its territory to be used for the initial ground offensive and missile strikes in 2022. Consequently, Russia leveraged Belarusian airspace and territory to facilitate its attacks, including launching drones against Ukrainian energy infrastructure. In response to these persistent threats, Ukrainian services are actively working to degrade the effectiveness of such military infrastructure.

The surge in production of 152mm shells, Grad rockets, and grenade launcher rounds may signal Minsk's intent to provide more substantial support to Russia's war effort. This development warrants close international attention, as deeper Belarusian involvement could significantly escalate the military situation in the region. Belarus has been a key logistical and staging ally for Russia since the invasion began.

This ammunition build-up points to a potential escalation of hostilities, posing increased dangers for Ukraine. Given the history of Russia using Belarusian territory for military operations, a shift in Minsk's military strategy could have significant security consequences not only for Ukraine but for neighboring states as well. This underscores the urgent need for sustained international monitoring and a coordinated response to the evolving situation.
