Pro-Russian Bulgarian Party Revival Demands Cancellation of Ukraine Agreement

According to Главком: A resolution submitted to Bulgaria’s National Assembly by the pro-Russian Revival Party seeks to terminate a ten-year bilateral security agreement with Ukraine. Party representative Petar Petrov introduced the proposal. Additionally, Revival has put forward a separate draft resolution to revoke Bulgaria’s consent for state guarantees totaling €1.2 billion, part of a €90 billion EU loan package designated for Ukraine.

Agreement Under Fire and Political Ramifications

The security pact with Ukraine was signed on March 30 of this year by Acting Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov. Under this agreement, officials have already held initial joint consultations, adopted a common statement, and agreed to develop a roadmap for practical steps. Gyurov highlighted that the collaboration covers key areas, including:

  • energy
  • defense cooperation
  • transport
  • security in the Black Sea region
  • meeting educational needs for children and youth

He emphasized the importance of this partnership, particularly in diversifying energy supplies and advancing the railway link between Alexandroupolis and Odesa-a project seen as vital for NATO’s entire eastern flank.

Revival Party lawmakers have leveled several criticisms against the agreement. First, they point to a lack of parliamentary oversight, noting that the government approved the pact without prior debate or legislative approval. Second, they consider the ten-year term excessive. They also voiced concerns over national security, arguing that such close cooperation with Ukraine could pose potential risks to Bulgaria itself.

This initiative by the Revival Party may signal shifting political currents in Bulgaria, particularly the growing influence of pro-Russian factions amid international tensions. While the Bulgarian government underscores the security agreement’s importance in strengthening ties with Western allies, it must also navigate domestic political challenges. This could fuel further parliamentary debates over the country’s foreign policy direction and its relations with both Ukraine and Russia.

As Bulgaria navigates its political landscape, the implications of the Revival Party's proposal could influence international relations, particularly with Ukraine. The importance of maintaining strong bilateral ties is underscored by recent statements from Ukrainian officials, emphasizing their commitment to fostering cooperation following the elections.
