Introducing the EF-12 Pilot: A Fully Electric Pilot Boat

According to НВ — Техно: On June 29, 2023, Artemis Technologies, based in Belfast, introduced the EF-12 Pilot-the world’s first 100% electric hydrofoil pilot boat. This vessel produces zero emissions and is powered by an advanced eFoiler system. It is designed to enable safe pilot transfers to large ships while meeting the rigorous standards set by pilotage services. Pilot boats are essential for transporting maritime pilots, who guide large vessels through challenging waters.

The EF-12 Pilot features the Artemis eFoiler drive system, which includes carbon-fiber hydrofoils and an electronic flight control system. It reaches a top speed of 32 knots, surpassing the 25-knot average of conventional pilot boats. Its range while riding on hydrofoils spans 45 to 55 nautical miles. Thanks to an ultra-fast DC charging station, the batteries can be fully recharged in under one hour. Additionally, the boat actively stabilizes its height, roll, and pitch-a critical safety feature during pilot transfers.

Innovation and Environmental Benefits

Artemis Technologies CEO Iain Percy stated: 'The pilotage service has very specific requirements for a vessel. The EF-12 Pilot applies proven hydrofoil technology to meet those demands and deliver an efficient, fully electric solution for pilots, crews, and port operations worldwide.'

A maritime pilot is a seasoned expert with deep knowledge of local waters, shallows, currents, and port characteristics. Traditionally, pilot boats are specialized vessels with deep V-shaped hulls, reinforced plating, heavy fenders, and powerful engines. With the launch of the EF-12 Pilot, Artemis Technologies is making a major leap forward in sustainable water transportation, offering an innovative solution tailored to modern maritime needs.

This new electric boat has the potential to transform pilot operations, reducing environmental impact while enhancing transfer safety. The use of hydrofoil technology not only improves speed but also boosts stability-a vital factor in pilot work. The adoption of such advances could mark a pivotal step toward greener shipping and sustainable marine transport.
