New Program Launches to Boost Computing Power

According to НВ — Техно: The United Kingdom has unveiled a major initiative to strengthen its computing capabilities, featuring a $1 billion national AI supercomputer. Scheduled to go live in 2030, this system will be part of the UK’s AI Research Resource, which also includes the Isambard-AI and Zenith platforms. Beyond hardware, the program funds chip development, educational efforts, and support for startups focused on artificial intelligence equipment.

Investing in Next-Generation Chips

As part of the plan, $534 million will go toward developing advanced chips. The breakdown is as follows:

  • $200 million will be spent this summer on purchasing inference chips for UK companies.
  • An additional $160 million will support businesses working on and testing new chip manufacturing technologies.
  • $60 million is earmarked for training engineers, chip designers, and researchers.

An investment fund managed by Playground Global will receive up to £150 million in backing from the British Business Bank. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall stated that

“artificial intelligence has become one of the main drivers of economic and political influence globally, and control over its hardware will determine future advantages for nations.”

The program also expands educational initiatives through new doctoral centers and student scholarships. The supercomputer will use a mixed chip architecture (heterogeneous architecture) to boost efficiency. Currently, the US and China dominate the global market for computing infrastructure and AI hardware, underscoring the importance of these investments for the UK.

The planned launch of the national AI supercomputer and the investments in chip technology highlight the UK’s ambition to strengthen its position in the global race for AI leadership. Amid growing competition from countries like the US and China, these initiatives could prove critical for ensuring national economic security and technological progress. The program also emphasizes the importance of education and workforce training in this dynamic field, which could shape the future of the British economy.
