Over 130 Years of Unpermitted Construction on Sagrada Família Finally Legalized in 2019
Legal Resolution Ends Century-Long Construction Dispute Over Sagrada Família
According to УНІАН — Туризм: The iconic Sagrada Família basilica in Barcelona had been under construction without official authorization for more than 130 years. This longstanding legal issue was finally settled in 2019 when the managing foundation paid the city €4.6 million. The municipal government then granted the official building permit in June 2019, marking a pivotal moment in the formal recognition of this architectural masterpiece.
Historical Background and Recent Investments
Construction began in 1882, initially led by architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. In 1883, the project was taken over by the renowned Antoni Gaudí, who dedicated over four decades of his life to the basilica. Gaudí applied for a construction permit in 1885 but never received a response. For decades thereafter, work proceeded without municipal approval. Gaudí passed away in 1926, never witnessing the official sanctioning of his work.
In 2018, the foundation responsible for the basilica committed to investing €36 million over ten years into Barcelona’s urban infrastructure. This investment reflects a serious effort to better integrate the basilica into the city’s social and economic framework. Additionally, in 2010, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the church and granted it the status of a minor basilica, highlighting its importance both architecturally and spiritually.
Other unique tourist attractions worth noting include:
- Skylodge Adventure Suites in Peru, perched 365 meters above the Sacred Valley;
- A café in Málaga that is home to 20 rescued cats, among them Apollo, a cat from Ukraine.
These destinations offer travelers distinctive experiences that enhance their visits.
The legal recognition of Sagrada Família’s construction is a significant milestone not only for the basilica itself but also for Barcelona as a whole. Official approval enables improvements in local infrastructure and boosts the city’s appeal as a top tourist destination, positively impacting the regional economy. The foundation’s investment plans and the basilica’s ecclesiastical status underscore the cultural and spiritual value of this extraordinary landmark to both residents and visitors alike.
