Food Price Increases Expected in Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: Food prices in Ukraine are projected to rise, with staples like bread, cereals, and vegetables becoming more expensive. This trend is driven by Russian attacks on the country's energy infrastructure and a reduction in export revenue. Experts anticipate the price of bread will increase by 1.5% to 2% each month.

Cereal prices could surge by up to 5%, a spike linked to a shortage of foreign currency earnings which complicates preparations for the new planting season. The cost of buckwheat is expected to reach 40 hryvnias per kilogram in January, with potential for an additional 8-10% increase.

Outlook for Vegetable and Meat Markets

Vegetable prices are also forecast to keep climbing until the arrival of the new harvest. While meat prices are currently stable, potential market fluctuations could trigger increases for pork and beef. These price pressures are a direct consequence of the ongoing war, which has severely disrupted Ukraine's agricultural and energy sectors.

Denis Marchuk, an expert, identified the primary causes of these negative market trends as Russian strikes on critical energy infrastructure and ports.

These factors are significantly impacting food security and the overall state of the market in Ukraine.

The rising cost of food stems not only from Russian military aggression but also from internal economic issues, including shortages of foreign currency and energy resources.
