Serviceman Apprehended

According to Главком: The State Bureau of Investigations has detained an active-duty serviceman who deserted his post in the Mykolaiv region and went into hiding in Kyiv. His location was discovered following the publication of a video in late February 2026, in which he made disparaging remarks about national symbols at a memorial for fallen Heroes. The serviceman has been formally notified of suspicion under Part 5 of Article 407 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This case highlights the stringent legal consequences for actions deemed disrespectful to national memory during wartime.

Investigators established that the soldier abandoned his military unit without authorization and concealed himself in the capital. After the video became public, he attempted to alter his appearance but was unsuccessful in evading capture. During questioning, he publicly apologized for his actions. The investigation confirmed that the man in the video spoke contemptuously of the national symbols placed to honor Ukraine's fallen defenders and demanded their removal.

Separate Administrative Case

In a related but separate incident, Kyiv police have held a 17-year-old from the Kharkiv region administratively liable. The teenager desecrated a memorial plaque on a residential building wall in Kyiv honoring a deceased soldier; he was visiting relatives in the city at the time. The sanction under Article 407 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine provides for a punishment of up to 10 years of imprisonment for such offenses.

These incidents underscore the gravity with which Ukraine treats violations against national symbols and the memory of its fallen defenders, particularly amid the ongoing armed conflict. The actions of the serviceman and the vandalism of memorial sites have provoked public outcry, pointing to a perceived need for stricter accountability to deter similar offenses in the future.
