Film Ban in Ukraine in 2025

According to Главком: The State Agency of Ukraine for Film has banned the screening and distribution of several films on the territory of Ukraine in 2025. In total, 2040 titles were entered into the State Register of Films, of which 7 films were banned.

List of Banned Films

The banned films include:

  • “A Prayer for Hetman Mazepa. New Version” (2010) - banned due to the involvement of Russian actor Nikita Dzhigurda.
  • “Caught in the Act” (2025, directed by Darren Aronofsky).
  • “Kraven the Hunter” (2024, directed by J.C. Chandor).
  • “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” (2017, directed by Patrick Hughes).
  • “Tenet” (2020, directed by Christopher Nolan).
  • “Terminal” (2004, directed by Steven Spielberg) - banned due to the involvement of Russian actor Valery Nikolaev.

Additionally, the film “Max 2: Hero of the White House” (2017, directed by Brian Levant) was excluded from the ban at the request of the ICTV channel. Thus, the decision of Derzhkino concerns six films that will not be shown in Ukrainian cinemas in 2025.

The ban on these films reflects Ukraine's ongoing policy to combat Russian influence in the cultural space, especially amid the ongoing conflict. This decision continues to be aimed at protecting the national security and cultural identity of the country. It is also important to note that the exclusion of one film from the ban may indicate a gradual review of the criteria used to determine threats to national security in a cultural context.
