Wild animals are increasingly appearing in cities and near homes: zoologist explains the risks
Ukrainians are increasingly seeing wild animals in cities. The appearance of moose in central Kyiv, foxes on the banks of the Dnipro, and bears in the Rivne region indicates a rise in animal populations and a loss of fear of humans. Experts believe that the cessation of hunting due to the war may be one of the reasons for this phenomenon.
“Animals have started to enter cities and no longer fear humans,” explained biologist Vitaliy Smagol.
Moose have been spotted in Obolon, near the Chernihivska metro station, and on the Southern Bridge, where forests are usually absent. Experts emphasize that aggressive behavior of wild animals is exceptional but may pose certain risks, including the spread of diseases such as rabies. Vitaliy Smagol called for state regulation of wild animal populations to avoid conflicts and ensure public safety.
With the spread of wild animals in cities, the question of regulating their populations at the state level is becoming relevant in Ukraine. This will help avoid conflicts with residents and ensure safety for all. It is also important to take measures to protect other animal species that are showing changes in their behavior due to alterations in their environment.
