Ukrainian Drone Strike Idles Russian Syzran Refinery for Over a Month

Ukrainian drones stopped Syzran Refinery in Russia
Українські дрони призвели до тривалих зупинок роботи нафтопереробного заводу в Сизрані.

Syzran Refinery Attack

According to Главком: On May 21, Ukrainian drones struck the Syzran oil refinery in Russia's Samara region, damaging the AVT-6 primary crude distillation unit. This attack forced the facility, which is part of the Rosneft network, to shut down. Repair efforts are expected to take more than a month.

The Syzran refinery plays a key role in the Samara refining hub, which also includes the Kuybyshev and Novokuybyshevsk plants. It has an annual capacity of 7 to 8.5 million metric tons of crude oil. The damaged AVT-6 unit handles over 70% of the plant's output, processing up to 17,100 metric tons per day.

Previous Strikes and Market Impact

This is not the first time the Syzran refinery has been targeted. It suffered damage in the spring and summer of last year, and the most recent prior attack occurred just a month earlier, on April 18, when equipment damage halted oil processing. After that incident, the AVT-6 unit was operating in emergency mode.

According to reports, most major refineries in central Russia have either paused operations or cut fuel production due to recent drone strikes. The combined capacity of facilities that have fully or partially stopped exceeds 83 million metric tons annually-roughly a quarter of Russia's total refining capacity. These plants previously supplied over 30% of Russia's gasoline and about 25% of its diesel fuel.

Crude oil for the Syzran refinery is sourced from Western Siberia, particularly the Khanty-Mansi region, via the Transneft pipeline system. The plant's output includes:

  • gasoline
  • diesel fuel
  • aviation fuel
  • fuel oil
  • bitumen
  • liquefied hydrocarbon gases

These products are distributed to Russia's domestic market and exported through Volga River logistics and pipeline networks.

This attack on the Syzran refinery highlights the growing impact of Ukrainian drones on Russian infrastructure, which could have serious consequences for Russia's energy security.

With several major refineries already offline, such strikes could further reduce fuel production in the country, affecting both the domestic market and export capabilities. These events illustrate the escalating conflict and its effects on key economic sectors in both nations.

The recent drone attack on the Syzran refinery is part of a broader trend of escalating strikes targeting critical infrastructure in Russia. This incident follows a similar overnight assault on the same facility, which has raised concerns about the vulnerability of Russian energy assets.
