Automatic Transmission at Traffic Lights: Why You Shouldn't Shift to Neutral

Positive or negative traffic light signal for drivers
Автоматична трансмісія на світлофорах: які ризики пов’язані з перемиканням на нейтраль.

According to hvylya.net: There are risks associated with shifting the transmission to Neutral (N), such as wear on the selector control elements and reduced control over the vehicle in emergency situations. Manufacturers recommend keeping the selector in position D for optimal transmission function and longevity.

According to information from 'Khvylia', there are new technical recommendations and expert opinions regarding whether one can shift an automatic transmission to neutral (N) while stopped at a traffic light. Most modern cars operate optimally when the selector is kept in Drive (D), maintaining oil temperature and ensuring readiness to move.

Shifting the transmission to N may only be justified during prolonged stops, but the design of the transmission and manufacturer recommendations should be considered. Regarding fuel savings, briefly switching to N does not provide significant benefits, as modern systems optimize engine performance while keeping the brakes engaged.

The main recommendation is to keep the transmission in position D during stops at traffic lights, avoid frequent shifting, and follow the manufacturer's instructions to maintain control functions of the vehicle.

When stopped at a traffic light, it's better to keep the transmission in Drive (D), as this promotes optimal transmission performance and preserves the vehicle's longevity. Shifting to neutral may increase the risks of wear and loss of control over the vehicle, so it's better to follow manufacturer recommendations for effective vehicle management.
