According to hvylya.net: On October 29, Attorney General Andriy Kravchenko announced the charges against former Odessa mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov in connection with the deaths of nine people during the tragic events that occurred on September 30. Nine officials from the city council and a utility company also received charges.
'On September 30, nine people died in Odessa. The blame lies not with natural disaster, but with the negligence of officials,' Kravchenko wrote on social media. He emphasized: 'This is not about negligence, this is about criminal negligence that led to the deaths of people.'
According to the prosecutor's office, the cause of the tragedy was the official's negligence, who had held the position for a long time and was aware of all the city's problems, yet took no measures to address them. All the accused face up to 8 years of imprisonment.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Among the victims were a family of internally displaced persons from Kurakhovo, a Ukrzaliznytsia inspector, a nurse, and other residents of Odessa. One family died on the basement level of a building, which was quickly flooded to a critical water level.
The National Police confirmed the charges against Trukhanov and other officials, including deputies, city council departmental employees, and executive staff of the utility company, who were involved in the deficiencies of the city's drainage and stormwater systems.
