According to Radiotrek — Світ: An image obtained by astronomers shows supernova SN 2020fqv in NGC 4568, one of two spiral galaxies that together form the Butterfly pair (NGC 4568 and NGC 4567). These two galaxies are slowly moving toward each other and will eventually merge into a single system. Approximately 60 million light-years away in the Virgo Cluster, their centers are separated by roughly 20,000 light-years. This rare event provides a front-row seat to the violent interactions that occur during galaxy mergers, which are key drivers of cosmic evolution.

The image was captured by the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii using observations from 2020. The Hubble Space Telescope then performed a detailed analysis of SN 2020fqv. The supernova erupted in a galactic pair currently undergoing a merger. Galaxy mergers are a natural phase in galactic evolution, and a similar event is predicted when the Milky Way collides with Andromeda in about 5 billion years.
