Expert on river flowering: why water quality has not improved in Ukraine

Summer in Ukraine has passed without significant improvement in the state of water resources, even with less hot weather and sufficient rainfall. This was stated by the vice president of the 'Ukrvodokanalgeologiya' association, Andriy Nikitin. He added that the quality of water in the rivers does not differ from previous years.

«I do not see a significant decrease in turbidity, color, and oxidation. This is caused not by temperature, but by untreated wastewater containing a lot of phosphorus – a real fertilizer for greenery in rivers», noted Nikitin.

He also emphasized that the cause of water bloom is not temperature, but the lack of investment in the wastewater treatment system for water utilities, which can severely worsen the state of rivers. In addition, the serious problem remains the consequences of the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP and the disappearance of the reservoir, which has already led to water loss in many villages.

Andriy Nikitin also expressed significant concern about the critical situation of water supply in occupied Donbass. He emphasized that the water supply system in this area is in a very difficult state, and the likelihood of a complete collapse is almost gone.

The expert's comments indicate that the situation with water resources in Ukraine remains a serious issue, especially in the ATO zone and occupied Donbass. Problems with water quality and supply require urgent measures to prevent further aggravation of the situation.
