EA Shuts Down BioWare and Cancels Mass Effect Sequel to Prioritize Star Wars Battlefront III
EA Ends BioWare Operations and Halts Mass Effect Sequel Development
According to НВ — Техно: Electronic Arts (EA) has announced the cancellation of the upcoming Mass Effect sequel and the closure of its renowned studio, BioWare. This strategic decision is aimed at focusing resources on the development of Star Wars Battlefront III in partnership with Lucasfilm. According to gaming journalist Jason Schreier in his Game On newsletter for Bloomberg, EA had to choose between two major sci-fi projects and ultimately opted for Star Wars Battlefront III, viewing it as a safer investment.
Although Star Wars Battlefront III has yet to enter development, the move to shut down BioWare and cancel the Mass Effect continuation followed months of evaluating market conditions, industry trends, and the company’s long-term goals. An EA spokesperson explained:
“Making tough calls is never easy, but we must concentrate our teams on the biggest opportunities for our future, including investments in new projects within our portfolio.”
This decision comes amid financial challenges for EA. Sales of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, released in 2024, fell short by 50% compared to expectations, likely influencing the company’s strategy. For context, Mass Effect: Andromeda was released in 2017 and Anthem in 2019. By the time BioWare was closed, only 50 employees remained at the studio.
EA’s Financial Struggles and Legacy
It’s important to note that EA was acquired by investors for $55 billion in August 2024, carrying a debt load of $18 billion. The company purchased BioWare in 2007 for over $800 million. BioWare’s MMORPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic, launched in 2011, has since generated over $1 billion in revenue.
Fans of Mass Effect reacted strongly to the news, organizing a petition that gathered more than 280,000 signatures. Additionally, a billboard featuring the hashtag #SaveMassEffect was displayed in New York City’s Times Square. On November 7, planned events for N7 Day-an annual celebration recognized by EA and BioWare-encourage fans to play Mass Effect Legendary Edition via Steam.
The cancellation of the new Mass Effect installment and BioWare’s shutdown highlight the difficult position EA faces, marked by financial hardships and underwhelming sales from recent titles. Choosing to advance with Star Wars Battlefront III reflects EA’s focus on franchises perceived as more commercially viable, though this has sparked significant backlash among dedicated fans. The ongoing community activism around Mass Effect underscores the passion and loyalty of its fanbase, who remain hopeful for the series’ revival in the future.
