According to glavcom.ua: The European Union has decided to cut imports of Ukrainian wheat and sugar by setting new quotas that will limit supply by 70-80%. This decision is intended to support European farmers, reports the 'Glavkom' portal citing Reuters.

Temporary abolition of duties and quotas for Ukraine

In a show of solidarity after the war began in 2022, the EU opened its food markets to Ukraine, but due to the large quantity of imports, mainly grain, sugar, and meat products, Brussels decided to restore restrictions.

New quotas and their volumes

  • Wheat: The annual quota is set at 1.3 million tons, which is 30% more compared to previous levels, but less than in the last three years.
  • Sugar: A quota of 100,000 tons has been established, which is almost 4 times less than before.
  • Barley: The quota will increase to 450,000 tons.
  • Poultry: The quota will rise to 120,000 tons.

Reactions from Ukrainian farmers

The Ukrainian farmers' lobbying association UCAB expressed dissatisfaction with the new restrictions, considering them a 'step back'. Grain traders believe that Ukrainian products can find a market in North Africa and Asia.

Ukraine in the FAO Council

Ukraine has become a member of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Council, which is an important achievement for the country and its role in global food security.

After a period of openness of European markets for Ukrainian products due to the situation in the country, the EU has decided to establish new quotas for the import of wheat and sugar. This decision has a positive impact on European farmers but causes dissatisfaction among Ukrainian producers. Ukraine has also achieved an important milestone by becoming a member of the FAO Council, highlighting its role in the global food sector.
