EU Urges US Against Military Action on Iran, Advocates for Diplomatic Path

EU and USA diplomatic relations
ЄС закликає США до мирного врегулювання ситуації з Іраном, виступаючи проти будь-яких військових заходів.

EU's Diplomatic Warning

According to Главком: The European Union has cautioned the United States against a potential military strike on Iran, urging a focus on diplomatic solutions to the dispute over Iran's nuclear program. Anwar El Anuna, the European Commission's spokesperson for foreign affairs, made the statement, emphasizing that

"diplomacy must be given a chance."

This call comes as the US is significantly increasing its military footprint in the Middle East, deploying fighter jets and naval strike groups to the region. Analysts assess this buildup as one of the largest reinforcements of American force in the area since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, raising regional tensions.

Washington's Demands and Tehran's Response

The US administration has presented Tehran with a set of demands, which include:

  • halting uranium enrichment,
  • scaling back its ballistic missile program,
  • and ceasing support for regional groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and Hamas in Gaza.

However, Tehran has rejected the possibility of completely abandoning uranium enrichment. In a notable diplomatic development, indirect talks between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, mediated by Omani officials, took place in Geneva on Tuesday.

In a related move, the EU Council has reached a political agreement to designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, with the final decision pending the completion of legal procedures. The United States had already designated the IRGC as a terrorist entity in 2019. US President Donald Trump stated that his administration would decide on its next steps regarding Iran within the next 10 days.

"A military escalation could have severe consequences for regional stability,"

the European Commission representative noted. The situation underscores the critical role of international diplomacy in resolving such conflicts, where military action risks triggering a wider, destabilizing confrontation across the Middle East.
