The Grand Rex Cinema: A Legacy of Art Deco and Renovation

According to УНІАН — Туризм: Paris's legendary Grand Rex cinema, which first opened its doors in 1932, is selling off some of its blue velvet seats as part of a renovation project for one of its smaller screening rooms. This intimate hall, which seats around 100 people, is scheduled for an upgrade. Built in the striking Art Deco style, the Grand Rex holds a special place in history-it was officially designated a historic monument in 1981.

The seats up for sale are in excellent condition. According to the cinema, standard chairs are priced at €30, while those with the Rex name printed on the back go for €40. Double seats are available for €60. The sale will operate on a first-come, first-served basis on Thursday, July 9th.

The Grand Rex's Rich Past

This cinema's significance goes far beyond its architecture. During World War II, the Nazis requisitioned the Grand Rex and renamed it Deutsches Soldatenkino. After liberation in 1946, the first Disney film shown within its walls was 'Pinocchio.' In 1950, it hosted a screening of 'Gone with the Wind.'

Originally, the plan was to build a 5,000-seat auditorium, but by the 1930s, screenings were already drawing over 3,000 attendees. The main hall, La Grande Salle, now holds up to 2,700 people, making it one of the largest cinemas in Paris.

With its deep history and cultural legacy, the Grand Rex remains a vital hub for cinema in France.

Selling these seats not only helps fund the renovation but also gives movie lovers a chance to own a piece of this iconic venue-these interior elements carry significant cultural value. Restoring the hall while preserving the cinema's historic character highlights the importance of maintaining cultural landmarks in today's world.
