According to Yakiv Didukh, the condition of forest shelterbelts in southern Ukraine highlights ecological issues that could worsen due to climate change.

Yakiv Didukh, Head of Department at the Institute of Botany, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

Yakiv Didukh, who leads a department at the Institute of Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, reported on the state of forest shelterbelts in southern Ukraine, which were planted in the 1950s–1970s. He noted that these shelterbelts are currently in poor condition and damaged. Dust storms in southern Ukraine may no longer remain a local occurrence and could escalate to a significant scale.

An increase in the frequency of dust storms could negatively impact agriculture, public health, and biodiversity in the region. Given the forecasted weather conditions, it is crucial to consider measures that could improve the condition of forest shelterbelts and help prevent environmental disasters.

As severe weather conditions are anticipated across much of Ukraine, it's important to stay informed about the specific risks in various regions. In particular, alerts for rain have been issued for southern and eastern areas, highlighting the potential for localized flooding and other weather-related disruptions. Understanding these developments can help residents better prepare for the upcoming storms.
