Hulk Joins Fluminense

According to Главком: Striker Hulk has inked a contract with Brazilian club Fluminense that runs until the end of 2027. The player joined on a free transfer after terminating his deal with Atlético Mineiro, following a conflict that emerged during the winter period. The official contract termination took place on May 1.

Hulk will wear the number 7 jersey for his new team. This season, he has played 22 matches across all competitions, scoring 5 goals and providing 3 assists. However, he has not taken the field since late April, a situation tied to the dispute between him and Atlético Mineiro's management. Club officials had suggested that Hulk retire at the end of this year and move into an administrative role.

Hulk's Career

Hulk's previous contract with Atlético Mineiro was set to run until the end of 2027. The club had planned to produce a documentary about the player, transfer some club shares to him, and erect a statue-but those plans fell through due to the conflict. Atlético Mineiro's CEO, Pedro Daniel, noted that Hulk turned down a long-term role in a unique project because of negotiations with Fluminense.

Hulk was born in the state of Paraíba and came through the youth system of Vitória from Salvador. He made his senior debut in the 2004 season, playing for Japanese clubs such as Kawasaki Frontale, Consadole Sapporo, and Tokyo Verdy. Ahead of the 2008/09 campaign, he joined Portugal's Porto, where he won:

  • four league titles
  • three cups
  • three Portuguese Super Cups
  • the Europa League trophy

At the start of the 2012/13 season, Hulk moved to Zenit St. Petersburg and later played for Chinese side Shanghai SIPG, winning championships in both Russia and China. In January 2021, he joined Atlético Mineiro, where he became Brazilian champion, won the Minas Gerais state title five times, and lifted the Brazilian Cup and Super Cup.

Hulk's signing with Fluminense marks a new chapter in his career. Despite the conflict with Atlético Mineiro, he remains one of the most prominent figures in Brazilian football. His experience and success across multiple leagues could significantly bolster Fluminense's squad, as the club aims to return to the top of Brazilian football. This transfer also reflects the ongoing shifts within Brazilian clubs, which are increasingly looking to bring in seasoned players to achieve success both domestically and internationally.
