LiFi Technology: Strengths and Limitations

According to Главком: LiFi, short for Light Fidelity, transmits data through rapid light pulses emitted by LED bulbs, offering faster speeds and stronger security than conventional Wi-Fi. While its advantages are notable, the technology comes with certain constraints. A key requirement for LiFi to function properly is a direct line of sight to the light source, which creates challenges in environments where obstacles might block the signal between transmitter and receiver.

One of LiFi's biggest selling points is its extraordinary data transfer rate-tens of times faster than what traditional Wi-Fi can achieve. This makes it especially appealing for high-stakes settings such as:

  • banks
  • government offices
  • military facilities
  • corporate environments

Additionally, because light cannot pass through walls, the signal is inherently shielded from external interception, providing an unmatched level of security.

However, the main drawback of LiFi is that it requires the lights to be on at all times, making it unusable in darkness. Stable internet connectivity in a room also depends on having uninterrupted access to the light source. To address these issues, manufacturers are planning a hybrid approach where LiFi works alongside Wi-Fi, allowing both technologies to be used where they perform best.

LiFi Integration and Tech Progress in Ukraine

Pilot projects integrating LiFi are currently running in European airports, universities, and office complexes, reflecting growing interest in this cutting-edge technology. Meanwhile, Ukraine is making its own technological strides-the AI assistant Lapathoniia, built on Ukrainian large language models, has recently launched. The infrastructure for Lapathoniia is hosted in Ukrainian data centers, underscoring the country's expanding tech capabilities.

In summary, LiFi opens up new possibilities for fast and secure data transmission, though its use is still limited by certain conditions. The evolution of this technology could significantly reshape the future of communications, yet Wi-Fi will remain a vital part of modern infrastructure. Given ongoing pilot programs, LiFi is expected to gradually find its way into everyday life, especially in areas where speed and security are critical. This could mark a major leap forward in wireless communications, particularly as demands for higher data rates and stronger protection continue to grow.
