Fatal Crash in the Andes
According to Главком: In a tragic accident on Sunday, 61-year-old Peruvian presidential candidate Napoleon Becerra was killed in a road collision on a remote stretch of highway near the town of Pilpichaca, located 430 km southeast of Lima. He was one of 36 contenders in the presidential election scheduled for April 12. Three other passengers were injured in the incident, and Becerra's body was transported to Huamanga, the administrative center of the Ayacucho region.
Becerra represented the Party of Workers and Entrepreneurs of Peru, though his polling numbers had not exceeded 1%. Peru's political landscape remains highly unstable, a situation exacerbated by corruption scandals that led to the removal of the previous president in February.
- Former President Martin Vizcarra, sentenced to 14 years in prison for taking bribes while serving as a regional governor, declared:
“This is not justice, it is revenge. But they will not break me.”
- Another former president, Alejandro Toledo, was convicted and sentenced to 20.5 years in prison for accepting $35 million in bribes from the company Odebrecht, which secured contracts to build two sections of the Interoceanic Highway.
