Kyiv Residents Face Higher Power Bills Following Extended Blackouts

Warning about rising electricity bills
Жителі Києва стикаються зі зростанням витрат на електрику після тривалої перерви в постачанні.

Rising Electricity Costs in Kyiv

According to Главком: Residents of Kyiv have been warned to expect increased electricity bills following prolonged power outages. Serhiy Kovalenko, CEO of the energy company Yasno, explained the reasons for the higher charges in the capital. He provided consumption data, noting that in November, 54% of Kyiv residents reduced their usage, a figure that rose to 62% in December. However, by January 2026, the proportion of those who increased their electricity consumption had grown to 41%, while those who reduced usage fell to 38%. These shifts in consumption patterns are a direct consequence of the strain on Ukraine's energy infrastructure due to ongoing conflict.

Causes of Increased Electricity Consumption

Kovalenko further clarified that when electrical motors in appliances restart after an outage, their power draw can spike by 3 to 7 times. This surge can significantly impact overall consumption during extended blackouts. He emphasized the importance of submitting meter readings between the 1st and 3rd of each month for accurate billing. This information can be submitted via the Yasno personal account or through chat bots on Viber and Telegram.

In a related move, the government has tasked the State Consumer Service with overseeing the automatic recalculation of utility bills for services not received. Starting January 1, 2026, Ukrainian utility bills will be automatically recalculated, a measure designed to simplify the process for consumers. This automatic adjustment is intended to provide greater transparency and help households manage costs during a period of significant energy instability.
