CXMT’s Plans for HBM3E Chip Manufacturing

According to НВ — Техно: Chinese semiconductor firm ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) is set to begin a limited rollout of its advanced HBM3E memory chips designed for artificial intelligence applications within the next two months. This move comes amid significant challenges, including a low yield rate of functional chips and U.S. restrictions on technology imports.

As the largest RAM manufacturer in China, CXMT currently produces only 20–30% of chips that meet rigorous quality standards, according to Reuters. This forces the company to discard or rework the majority of its output. Samples of the new HBM3E chips have already been shared with several Chinese AI processor developers. Notably, CXMT’s HBM3E specifications more closely resemble the previous generation HBM3 chips from South Korea’s SK Hynix, rather than SK Hynix’s latest models.

HBM3E Production Challenges and Market Demand

HBM3E is a high-bandwidth memory technology crucial for powering advanced AI processors. Its vertically stacked design enables rapid data transfer, but manufacturing these chips requires sophisticated technology and significant investment. In comparison, SK Hynix achieves approximately 70% yield rates for HBM chips, far surpassing CXMT’s current performance.

The growing AI sector has driven up demand for memory components, as tech giants invest billions into building AI data centers. Meanwhile, China faces U.S. export controls that limit access to cutting-edge chips and manufacturing equipment, causing some domestic developers to rely on expensive unofficial suppliers. Beijing is actively pushing to develop homegrown alternatives to Nvidia processors as part of its broader tech self-reliance strategy.

So far, CXMT has not responded to Reuters’ requests for comments regarding its production plans.

The difficulties in China’s memory chip production reflect wider shifts in the global tech landscape, where intensifying competition for advanced technologies is accelerating innovation. U.S. restrictions on technology exports may incentivize Chinese companies to speed up the development of indigenous capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign sources.
