Cadet and student saved children from icy water: the story of heroes from Kolomiya

According to ДСНС: Four children, including a boy and three girls aged from 8 to 11 years, fell through the ice into a frozen pond in Kolomiya during the festive caroling. In this critical moment, two young men came to the rescue: 18-year-old Roman Plihtyak, a cadet of the Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs, and 16-year-old Yarema Knyshchuk, a student of the local college. They began to rescue the children while rescuers were on their way to the call.

The youngest boy disappeared under the water, causing panic. Roman Plihtyak, commenting on the situation, noted:

“I had no right to panic. I am a future law enforcement officer. The scariest thing was to hear those screams and realize that there were many children, while seconds were mercilessly melting away.”

Thanks to the quick and decisive actions of the young men, all the children were pulled from the water and handed over to the emergency medical team. After examination at the hospital, all the children returned home, and their lives were saved thanks to the heroic actions of Roman Plihtyak and Yarema Knyshchuk.

The importance of promptness and courage

This story highlights the importance of promptness and courage in critical situations, as well as demonstrates how youth can be a hope for those in trouble.

This incident in Kolomiya serves as a vivid example of how quick responses and a willingness to help can save lives. The story of Roman and Yarema not only inspires but also reminds us of the need for appropriate training for youth in potential emergency situations. In the context of increasing risks of such incidents, it is important to ensure access to training in rescue skills and first aid among youth, which can save even more lives in the future.
