Latvia Declares Peace Talks with Russia Futile as Long as Putin's Objectives Remain Unchanged
Current State of Ukraine-Russia Peace Negotiations
According to Главком: Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže has stated that peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia cannot yield results unless Russian President Vladimir Putin abandons his current ambitions. Speaking at the Riga StratCom Dialogue conference, Braže emphasized that Putin has not altered his goals, which include subjugating Ukraine, enforcing its Russification, and preventing its integration into the Euro-Atlantic community. She noted that
“at the political level, as long as Russia does not give up its goals, negotiations cannot produce results”
- Baiba Braže.
Moscow’s Demands and Their Implications
Braže also described Moscow’s demands as unacceptable for Ukraine. These include:
- granting official status to the Russian language;
- addressing the role of the Russian Orthodox Church;
- ceding control over Donbas.
The minister pointed out that these demands are also unacceptable to European nations and the Euro-Atlantic community, particularly regarding NATO and the presence of Alliance forces.
“Only force on the battlefield, combined with the strength of NATO allies, will compel Russia to be sincere at the negotiating table and abandon its political goals”
- she added.
Braže stressed that European countries, together with Ukrainian authorities, are working on a strategy to bring Russia into a peaceful resolution. This diplomatic push is driven by shifting battlefield dynamics in favor of Ukraine’s Armed Forces. At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed his readiness for direct talks with Vladimir Putin.
Braže’s statement underscores Latvia’s and its allies’ unwavering support for Ukraine amid this conflict. Despite efforts to pursue a peaceful settlement, Russia’s rigid stance continues to complicate diplomatic initiatives. As Braže notes, the peace negotiation process requires Russia to demonstrate genuine commitment, which hinges on developments at the front and sustained backing from international partners.
While Latvia emphasizes the futility of negotiations under the current Russian leadership, it's important to note that Ukraine has expressed its willingness for direct discussions with Putin. This development could influence the overall dynamics of the conflict and the prospects for peace.
