Starting in 2032, Lithuania to Implement Nationwide Military Conscription, Drafting 7,500 Youth Annually
З початку 2032 року Литва запровадить військовий призов, який дозволить залучати 7,500 молодих людей щорічно.

Nationwide Military Draft in Lithuania

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Lithuania is set to introduce compulsory military conscription beginning in 2032, enlisting approximately 7,500 young individuals each year. This decision follows a thorough assessment of the country's evolving security needs. The nation reinstated selective conscription in 2015 amid escalating regional tensions after Russia’s annexation of Crimea. Since then, over 5,000 young people have been drafted annually.

President Gitanas Nausėda stated, 'We have decided to implement universal conscription starting in 2032.'

He further noted that women will continue to serve in the military on a voluntary basis, calling this approach optimal. It is expected that some conscripts might be deemed unfit for service due to health reasons.

Expanded Service Opportunities

The scope of military roles available to conscripts will broaden, allowing them to:

  • train as drone operators,
  • support the State Border Guard Service,
  • serve as firefighters.

These adjustments reflect Lithuania’s commitment to modernizing its armed forces in response to current challenges.

Implementing universal conscription marks a significant milestone for Lithuania amid increasing regional security threats. This measure underlines the country’s determination to bolster national defense and prepare its youth for military responsibilities. Given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and Russia’s aggressive stance, Lithuania continues to enhance its military capabilities and readiness to safeguard its sovereignty.

As Lithuania strengthens its military framework, the country is also taking significant steps to enhance its defense partnerships. In line with this commitment, Lithuania has pledged to support the permanent deployment of U.S. troops, with defense spending projected to exceed 5% of GDP. This strategic move aims to bolster national security in an increasingly volatile region. For more insights into Lithuania's defense initiatives, read about the commitment to U.S. military presence.
