President of Moldova Issues a Stark Warning

According to Рубрика — Політика: Moldova’s President, Maia Sandu, has alerted the public to anticipated attempts by Russia to destabilize the country in the coming months. According to Sandu, these efforts aim to create an illusion of instability that could obstruct Moldova’s path toward joining the European Union. She emphasized that such tactics might raise doubts among EU member states, potentially delaying Moldova’s integration process.

Over the past month, Moldova has made significant progress in meeting interim benchmarks related to the rule of law. The Moldovan government has submitted the required documents and reports to the European Commission, demonstrating compliance with necessary criteria. The Commission plans to complete its evaluation of these submissions by the end of 2026. A favorable assessment will then be forwarded to the EU Council for further consideration.

Russia’s Intentions and Moldova’s Response

Sandu highlighted that Russia’s strategy involves transforming Moldova into a second Belarus and using its territory as a platform against Ukraine and the European Union. However, she noted that Moldovan citizens successfully thwarted this plan through recent elections.

'I can only say that in the months ahead and beyond, we will witness new attempts by the Russian Federation to destabilize or create the appearance of destabilization in the Republic of Moldova to create obstacles,' Maia Sandu stated.

She further added:

'Unfortunately, this is what we will see. We must be prepared and respond appropriately-first and foremost to preserve stability and peace at home, and secondly, to protect our European integration efforts.'

These remarks underscore the critical importance of maintaining internal stability and securing external support to advance Moldova’s Euro-integration agenda.

In terms of international cooperation, Moldova and Ukraine are drafting an agreement on energy collaboration, while Moldova is prepared to welcome a new influx of Ukrainian refugees this winter. The European Union is adopting a personalized approach to Moldova and Ukraine’s membership prospects, reflecting intensified cooperation amid ongoing regional challenges.

The developments in Moldova highlight the pressing relevance of its foreign policy, especially regarding relations with the EU and Russia. Amid potential destabilizing threats, it is crucial for Moldova to uphold national unity and continue implementing reforms essential for aligning with European standards. The partnership with Ukraine in energy matters and refugee support also illustrates regional solidarity amid rising geopolitical pressures.

In light of Maia Sandu's warnings about external threats to Moldova's stability, it's vital to consider how regional partnerships can bolster the country's resilience. For instance, the recent collaboration between Kyiv and Chișinău on energy security highlights the importance of cooperative efforts in ensuring preparedness for the winter months. Such agreements not only strengthen bilateral ties but also contribute to Moldova's broader European integration ambitions. To learn more about this strategic partnership, click here.
